Joy is something we all want to feel, but we spend so much of our time looking for it, we forget to experience it. We often think, “I’ll be so happy when…” Then, the “when” finally comes and we are onto the next thing. In the process, we miss the joy.
There are certain chapters in life that we don’t feel joy such as when we go through trials, we are in a time of waiting, or we see ourselves as nothing more than broken human beings. Living in the present is what we are told to do, but how can we find joy in all our present circumstances?
“The secret to joy is to keep seeking God where we doubt He is.” –Ann Voskamp
Here are three ways we can be sure to find joy in all circumstances:
1. Abide in God’s love.
John 15 is a great passage encouraging us to abide in God’s love. When we allow Christ into our lives and also allow ourselves to be with God, we will produce good fruit, even after difficult times of pruning. When we bear fruit, we experience an everlasting joy.
2. Rejoice always.
Paul tells us in Philippians 4:4 to always find joy in the Lord. Paul wrote this while he was in jail, so this proves he was not telling us to find joy when things in our life are going well. The verse never said, “Rejoice in your positive circumstances.” Instead, it says, “Rejoice in the Lord always.”
3. Ask God for joy.
There will be times for mourning and grieving where the seasons are long. There will also be periods of time that feel monotonous where the feeling of joy is only a pleasant memory. During these times, we must ask God to give us the kind of joy that only He can give. The joy that doesn’t require understanding nor does it require ideal circumstances. The joy of the Lord gives us strength, comfort, healing, and hope. And His joy cannot be taken away or stripped from us during our hardest times.
We don’t have to wait for the perfect “when” to abide in God’s love, rejoice always, and ask God to give us His eternal joy. We must remain faithful, and we will soon see the fruits of our efforts.
